Well, today is the day Gold from Pokemon Special was born (July 21st, for those who don't know), and it's been a long time since I wrote a one-shot, so forgive me if it sucks.

Of course, it's a story starring Gold himself, so I hope you enjoy <3

All that is Gold does not Glitter
Rating: G

Six years prior to the large battle that took place at the Battle Frontier, and just before Red began his journey in Kanto, there was a fire that had started in one of the houses in New Bark Town. The parents had made it out safely, but there was still a young boy and his Rattata stuck inside, and no Water Pokemon around to help put out the fire. The boy was too young to know how to escape, so he could do nothing but cry out in fear. Whenever a brave firefighter approached the house, the fire would intensify, blocking their way in.

With all hope lost, the parents turned away, as if trying to pretend that their house was still intact and their boy safe from harm.

And that's when he showed up.

Gold wasn't much older than the boy himself, but he was much braver, and knew how to get out of a building caught on fire. With the help of his family's Sandshrew, he managed to extinguish one of the smaller fires at the window, and proceeded to climb through. As he made his way through the smoke and flames, his Sandshrew would kick up bursts of sand to weaken the fire so Gold could move on.

The people outside had their doubts about Gold, the boy, and their Pokemon making it out alive, but they still waited patiently. A few moments later, their patience wore off. A small sandstorm blew out the fire that had reignited itself by the same window Gold had entered, and the head of the young boy popped out. The parents rushed over to their son, embracing him and telling him how worried they were. The Rattata, along with Gold and his Sandshrew, soon appeared afterwards.

The number of people who told Gold how brave he was was equal to the number of people who told him how he could've been killed in that fire. But Gold didn't care. When asked why he did it, he always gave the same reply: "Because that's what someone else would've done for me if I had been in that same situation!"

What the people didn't know, was, Gold had, in fact, been caught in a life-threatening fire.

It happened on Gold's sixth birthday. He had received a plethora of gifts, and the cake was expected to be bigger than it was the previous year. There were a number of guests over, mostly adults, but there were some kids too. Of course, none of them were very close to Gold and only came because there'd be no one to watch them at home. No one paid attention to Gold until it was time to open presents and eat cake, but instead conversed with one another. It was the same as it had always been.

When present time came, Gold ripped open each and every gift without a care in the world. To his dismay, it was mostly clothes, and although he always seemed to get that sort of gift anyways, he scowled at each and every piece he got. When he got to the last gift, he realized it was nothing but a card. The card had no name, just some text, which Gold read to himself.

"All that is gold does not glitter. And until you learn to be thankful for what you have, you, too, shall never glitter." The words tore a small hole in Gold's heart, and without another word he proceeded to his room. He left his gifts scattered on the floor, but brought the card with him. He read it over and over again, wondering why it was that someone decided to pick on him. The only person he could talk to was his closest friend, who was also in the same room as he.

"Ataro, am I really unthankful for what I have?" he asked. The Aipom shook its head in disagreement, and Gold gave a toothy smile. "I'm glad you think so too!" He crumpled the card off and shot it into the wastebasket, and then turned on the radio. The first thing he heard was Mary's voice, but he figured as much. He always had the radio tuned to Oak's Pokemon talk show, where Mary would actually do most the talking. Someday, I'd like to meet Mary myself! he thought happily.

After the talk show had come to an end, Gold turned off the radio and listened to the indistinguishable conversations going on beneath him. The adults always talked about things he could never understand, so it was never any fun being around them. And the kids didn't seem to have anything in common with him, so he couldn't bring himself to talk with them either.

As time flew by, Gold wondered when the cake was finally going to be finished. He was a bit sleepy due to boredom, so it wasn't long before he dozed off.

His nap was short-lived. The room seemed to be a lot hotter than it was before, and there was somebody constantly shouting "Get the fire department!!!" outside Gold's window. He woke with no problem, only to find flames dancing in his room. Smoke was everywhere, and Ataro was found next to Gold, crouching in a somewhat fetal position. Alarmed by this, Gold ripped off his blanket and tried to extinguish the flames himself. His efforts failed, however, and the fire just seemed to grow bigger.

Being the character he was, though, Gold wouldn't give up. He began going through everything he had, toys, clothes, you name it, until he came across a water gun. He pulled the trigger, hoping there was still some water left in it. Sure enough, water squirted out, but it was not enough to do any damage to the flames. He then tried throwing plush dolls at the fire, but they just seemed to help the fire grow. At last, he turned to his Aipom.

"Ataro, do you think you can put the fire out using your tail?" The Aipom looked at him quizzically, but did as asked to. He began swishing his tail back and forth, but seeing how that also made the fire grow, began attempting to slam it on top of the fire. That, however, caused his tail to catch on fire, which scared the poor Aipom to death. He subconsciously jumped out of the window to avoid getting even more burned, leaving Gold to die.

The room got hotter every minute, and Gold had tried just about everything he could to put out the fire. There was one other option, and knowing Gold, he would've gone through with it as a last resort if he hadn't lost consciousness from the heat.

When Gold woke up, he found himself in a bed at the Cherrygrove Pokemon Center. It was quite a ways from his home, but that was the closest Pokemon Center one could come across. His parents looked at him with relieved faces, and his mom bent down to hug him.

"I'm so glad you're all right, Gold!" she cried out in joy. "I don't know what I would've done if you had died!"

"I'm OK, really! The fire didn't hurt me at all!" Gold gave a carefree smile, which caused his mom to break into even more tears. His father approached him from the other side, a serious expression on his face.

"Gold, when you're all better, I think it's about time I teach you what to do if you're in a fire, all right?" Gold nodded his head rapidly, slowly, though he couldn't care less.

One year passed since the incident, and it was Gold's birthday again. This time, though, there were a lot less guests, but the ones that were present were all related to Gold. The kids, too, where Gold's cousins. And instead of receiving a lot of gifts as before, Gold only got one from each family. As for the cake, it was about the size as any other average cake. This time, though, Gold was a lot happier. He was delighted to receive a cue stick and skateboard from two of his wealthier aunts and uncles. And with every gift, even if it was another pair of pants or a t-shirt, he thanked each and everyone of his relatives for the present. This, indeed, was the perfect birthday.
